FAQ & troubleshooting

Fixes for VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (577), slow VMs with the green turtle icon, license activation, a missing Fingerprint page, VirtualBox conflicts and uninstalling.

Starting a VM fails with VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED or error 577. What should I do?

Windows blocked the VBoxSup.sys host driver because it is not yet signed by Microsoft (Microsoft Partner registration and driver submission are in progress). Disable Secure Boot in UEFI (save your BitLocker recovery key first), turn off Memory Integrity, then run GPMBoxPlusChecker.exe again to make sure no FAIL items remain. If the error persists, uninstall GPMBoxPlus, restart and reinstall.

Do I need to enable Test Mode (bcdedit /set testsigning on)?

No. The GPMBoxPlus drivers embed a GlobalSign cross-certificate, so Windows accepts them once Secure Boot is off. Test Mode is only an alternative, and it can also only be enabled after Secure Boot has been turned off.

The VM is very slow and shows a green turtle icon in the corner. Why?

The Windows hypervisor (Hyper-V, Memory Integrity/VBS, WSL2, Windows Sandbox) is running, so GPMBoxPlus has to fall back to the slow NEM mode. Turn off Memory Integrity, run bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off as Administrator and restart the PC.

Can GPMBoxPlus be installed alongside VirtualBox, the old GPMBox or T13?

No. GPMBoxPlus and other virtualization software built on open-source VirtualBox (Oracle VirtualBox, the old GPMBox/GpmrealBox, T13…) use the same kind of host drivers, so they cannot be installed side by side. Uninstall that software and restart the PC before installing. If any drivers or services are left behind, use GPMBoxPlusUninstallSupport.exe to clean them up.

Clicking Start shows “This copy of the product is not activated”. Why?

GPMBoxPlus has not been activated, or the activation has expired. Open Help → Active License…, enter your license key and click Activate. The PC must be able to reach api.gpmsoftwares.com.

What happens to my license if I change hardware or move to a new PC?

The license is bound to a device ID derived from the CPU and hardware serial numbers of the physical machine. When you switch PCs or replace major components, manage your devices at account.gpmsoftwares.com and then activate again on the new machine.

Why doesn't the New Virtual Machine wizard show the Hardware Fingerprint page?

The Fingerprint page only appears when Windows is installed unattended. Select an original Windows ISO in the ISO Image field and keep Proceed with Unattended Installation checked.

Why can't I choose a high-end graphics card such as an RTX 4090?

The VM renders graphics through a virtual adapter with 256 MB of VRAM, so performance is only on par with integrated graphics. Declaring a high-end card would create an inconsistency that is easy to detect, so GPMBoxPlus only offers mainstream and entry-level cards.

The “GPM Driver Installer” window inside the VM is stuck and not progressing. Why?

You may have clicked inside the window, putting the Windows console into text selection mode (QuickEdit). Press Enter or Esc once to let the script continue. Do not close the window until you see the line All done.

How do I set up a proxy for a VM?

After installation, the VM's Desktop has GPM Proxy Tunnel. Run it as Administrator, paste an HTTP or SOCKS5 proxy (ip:port, ip:port:user:pass, user:pass@ip:port, socks5://…, http://…) and connect. All VM traffic then goes through the proxy. If the proxy dies, the VM loses network access instead of leaking your real IP. Proxifier Setup and Throne are also included.

Uninstalling GPMBoxPlus failed or left drivers behind. What now?

Run GPMBoxPlusUninstallSupport.exe as Administrator. The tool stops processes and removes leftover devices, network filters, services, driver packages and files from VirtualBox, GPMBox, GpmrealBox and GPMBoxPlus. Restart the PC if the tool asks you to.
